Types of Canada Scholarships

The David Johnston–Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards will be presented by the University of Waterloo to highly successful candidates in support of Canadian and international students. This is a full-time program open to students from all over the world who wish to study in any of the Waterloo Faculty’s fully funded scholarship for undergraduate or graduate programs. Based on their award allocation, faculties will nominate qualified students. Students will be chosen based on their academic achievements as evidenced in their graduate degree application.

The International Master’s Award of Excellence will be given to qualifying international master’s students joining a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo. These scholarships to study in Canada will be worth $2,500 each term for a maximum of five full-time terms within the program time restrictions (6 terms). Based on their award allocation, faculties will nominate qualified students. Students will be chosen based on their academic achievements as evidenced in their graduate degree application.

Scholarship Benefits

The following are some of the advantages of receiving a University of Waterloo Scholarships:

  • The David Johnston–Lebovic Foundation will award up to $2,500 for a one-term study experience, $2,500 to $5,000 for a one-term work or volunteer experience, and up to $10,000 for a two-term work or volunteer adventure.
  • The International Master’s Award of Excellence is worth $2,500 every year, with a total of six periods available.

Eligibility Criteria

For David Johnston – Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards:
  • Candidates with high academic standing (usually a minimum 70% average at the undergraduate level; normally a minimum 75% average at the graduate level) are eligible to apply.
  • Full-time undergraduate and graduate students from any faculty who want to participate in an international experience in Israel, such as a minimally paid or volunteer international co-op work placement, a volunteer placement, an academic exchange, or a study term related to academic requirements, must apply.
For International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE) Awards:
  • International students who are enrolled full-time and have a valid Canadian study permit are charged international tuition rates.
  • Students in research-based programs are usually given this award (thesis or major research paper).
  • Will usually only be awarded to students who are starting their program for the first time (term 1.0).
  • Students must exhibit academic distinction according to the Faculty’s standards.
  • Students must keep up with their program’s academic standards and not have any outstanding probationary admission requirements.
  • This scholarship may be used in conjunction with other internal or external scholarships.
  • Students should not receive foreign government or agency sponsorship at the same time (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan funding, etc.) or be entirely or partially self-funded in excess of the Faculty minimum support levels.
  • Students who have been grandfathered under the present IMSA program are unable to be nominated for an IMAE; however, a student who has previously received an IMSA for a master’s degree can be nominated for an IMAE.
  • Based on their admissions application, students will be automatically eligible for this award. Departments and/or faculties shall create their own internal process for selecting winners based on eligibility and allocation criteria.
