Legal Officer

Job Specifications:

Job Description:

The Legal Officer will be responsible for drafting, reviewing, updating, filing, reporting, and providing day-to-day legal support within the assigned region. Key responsibilities include:

  • Drafting, analyzing, and reviewing legal agreements, legislation, and documents for the region.
  • Providing first-level advisory on documents with legal implications for work groups and functions within the region.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date filing system for all legal documents and cases related to the region.
  • Executing departmental initiatives within the region.
  • Providing direction and assigning tasks to personnel within the Legal Unit.
  • Identifying legal risk areas within the region and escalating them for proper mitigation.
  • Rendering periodic reports on all legal-related matters within the region.
  • Tracking adherence to legal policies and procedures within the region.
  • Working closely with external solicitors within the region and tracking their deliverables in alignment with the terms of reference/service level agreements.
  • Overseeing the readiness of all stakeholders for court appearances.
  • Coordinating the process of preparing court cases in the region, including taking depositions, preparing pre-trial briefs, evidence gathering, and drafting pleadings for filing.
  • Conducting periodic sensitization on legal pronouncements to minimize or eliminate legal risks.
  • Following up on cases filed against the organization and preparing legal reports and opinions.
  • Performing any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) degree from a recognized institution.
  • Be a member of the Nigerian Bar Association.
  • Have a minimum of 8 years of experience, with at least 4 years in a similar position in a reputable organization.
